Motivation

It matters how you play the game.  I went to Arizona this weekend because Daniel’s soccer teams had games in Tempe.  Youth sports have really bothered me the last few years.  About 3/4 of the way through the game I was really frustrated by the way many of Daniel’s teammates were playing and acting.  They were quick to criticize their teammates for their mistakes with harsh tones but then took no responsibility for their own continuous mistakes.  It looked selfish.  Then with less than 10 minutes in the game I observed and participated in what could be the cause of my frustration.  Us, the parents.

With the other team winning by 1 I heard a parent yell to their player to leave the ball after their team had been called for a penalty.  The player had the ball at his feet.  What the parent was yelling was in essence telling him to delay the game by making it harder for our team to restart the play.  Since the ball was at the players feet it would be very obvious he was going out of his way not to help.  The parent was sitting just ten feet to my right and I couldn’t keep my mouth shut.  Just moments before the ball had rolled out of bounds and I observed one of their parents move out of the way of a ball that had rolled out of bounds. They had let the ball roll past them making it harder for our team to restart the ball.  So I said, “You teach your kids to be unsportsmanlike?  That’s cool”  This was received with expected hostility.  We exchanged words.  Meanwhile their player actually did kick the ball to our player so we could restart.  Our player returned the gesture by allowing the player to get in a defensive position.

The kids want to play the game the right way.  They want to have a good competitive game and they want to help each other.  I think us parents are setting bad examples.  Myself included.  It doesn’t matter whether you win or lose it is how you play and watch the game.
