Fitness is a means to learn about ourselves and become our very best.
Johann started in our Kaizen Youth Club in October of 2016 and has been a steady participant since. Our Kaizen Youth Club is a non-profit that I’ve been running since September of 2010 to serve at-risk youth in our community. Our participants come from Silverado Alternative High School which is part of the Saddleback Unified School District. Mr. David Gordon is the principal and a workout enthusiast so we have had a great relationship. He is a driving force for the program’s success. To qualify for our program the kids must first get approval by Mr Gordon. He approves them based on their attendance, attitude, and classroom success. I run classes for the Club on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the school year. The kids have an option to attend our normal scheduled class during the summer. All of which is free for the students who qualify.
Working with youth from Silverado has been very rewarding. Seeing young men and women like Johann find themselves through fitness is very rewarding. There is a negative stereotype associated with kids who attend “Silvy.” Building their confidence is a priority and Mr. Gordon does a great job at the school. Attending Johann’s graduation was an emotional reminder of why we need to give these kids our attention. The student speakers at the graduation have stories fit for TV. The adversity these kids have faced is and overcome is remarkable. Their challenges range from academic to home life. Johann himself has an incredible story which makes his accomplishment and bright outlook on life that much more impressive. I encourage all of our members to get to know Johann. He will be attending Irvine Valley Community College in the fall and has aspirations of being a writer and becoming a fitness coach. He is also the one who has been keeping our gym so clean the past few months. Johann is gonna accomplish big things in his life. He is determined, focused, and humble. The best moment with Johann this year was when he brought me his report card after the second trimester. He explained it’s the first time in his life he got straight A’s. He thanked me for supporting him. I had to fight to keep back tears. His last trimester he was again able to get straight A’s. Where many seniors let off the throttle Johann has now found his grove and I don’t think he can slow down.
The Kaizen Youth Club plans to assist Johann with his school expenses and will be sending him to a youth leadership camp in July. The camp is run by Steve’s Club National Program which is the parent organization of my Kaizen Youth Club. Johann will be getting on a plane (for the first time) and will head to Pennsylvania for a week. If you wish to support Johann and our Kaizen Youth Club donations can be made to the club. The club is a registered 501(c)(3) and all donations are tax deductible.
